There were 31 summer track and field club teams that showed up to compete for the first place I-95 Invitational Track Meet trophy at Freedom High School. The hot and humid day began with the 200m/400m hurdles. Running in the sub-bantam division, Mikayla McFarland from PWC Panthers won the event with her best time of 32.43. Paris Burton and Edya Burton of Richmond Heat were chasing McFarland down but only managed to hold on to second and third, respectively. McFarland also won the sub-bantam girls long jump with a personal record of 10 feet 8.50 inches. She places 2nd in the sub-bantam girl’s 100meter dash running at time of 15.72. She lost by one-one hundredths of a second to Lyric Hoggard who ran 15.71. It was an extremely close race from the start to the finish line.
The fourteen year old Mia-Irene Gyau highlighted the meet for the Titans Track Club with her first-place finish in the 800 meters in a sizzling 2:15.23 seconds. Mia beat Cydney Alexander from the Virginia Beach Track Cluv by and an astonishing 34 seconds.
Next up were the youth girls, Ceeasha Gist from Virgina Beach Track club advanced to the finals in the 100m dash. The gun went off for a clean start and Gist flew out of the blocks beating out the seven-person field to win in a time of 12.93. Her teammate Erykah Johnson came in second running 13.19. Both athletes scored, and earned a medal, and perhaps more importantly, earned a spot in the regional 3 meet which is the qualifier for the Junior Olympics. J.O’s will be held the last week of July through the beginning of August at Morgan State University. Ceesha was also victories in the 200m dash. After waiting over 10 minutes for her race to start because of some technical difficulties from the finish line timing tent, the race commenced and Gist took off like a rocket. She was battling around the curve with Diaja Lapkin from Wilmington Track Club and Kori-Madisyn Blount form N-Motion TC. But both of the youth girls fail their quest to take home the first place medal because Gist came down the back straight with her arms and knees pumping hard and strong, moving fast and then crossing the finish line with the other competitors behind her. She dominated the event with a time of 27.07. Lapkin, Blount, and Stafford from Richmond TC ran 27.42, 27.43, 27.54, respectively. Erykah had a slightly off race and finishing 5th in the youth girls 200m dash with a time of 27.84.
The day ended with Tri-City Jet’s Leon Pollard II, finished 1st place in the young men’s long jump event. He popped out a huge jump of 23 feet even; the rest of the field jumped 3 feet less than Pollard. Pollard also left the rest of the competitors brokenhearted when he won the young men’s 110meter hurdles running a fast time of 14.42.
Other performers from the I-95 Invitational included PWC Panthers’ Mustageem Williams winning the 100meter dash (10.76) and the 200m dash (22.13). The PWC Panthers’ took the top three places in the young men’s 200m dash. The Tri-City young men’s 400meter and 1600m relay’s team took 1st, and Christian White capped off the meet with a 1st-place finish in the championship flight of the young men discus. He threw 27.40m which translates to 135 feet.
