The city that I believe would most benefit with having a new skate park is the city of Tiffin, Ohio. They would be a prime candidate for a Grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation (THF). Tiffin, OH meets many of the requirements outlined by the THF and has the capability of following through with a skate park project. First, with a population of 17,963 and a median income around $33,261, Tiffin’s residents would greatly benefit from a free skate park. 12.3% of the population is living below the poverty line and would not have the means to afford many recreational opportunities. A free skate park that is open during day light hours, 365 days a year would be an excellent opportunity to serve the people of Tiffin.
Hedges-Boyer Park is the largest park which is owned by the city of Tiffin. There are various events and programs which are held here at the park. Moreover, the park attracts children and the families to spend quality time together. The park is full of greenery and open air for elders too for relaxing and strolling during the mornings and evenings. This park is one component of the greater scheme of the recreational activities available at the park. As the Hedges-Boyer Park is located on 78 acres of land, a new skate park for the central area can be constructed, which currently is a park mainly for walking. With the addition of a skate park, a similar roll out of new basketball and tennis courts would follow to optimize recreational use for the city’s residents. The design and creation of the skate park can come from the volunteers and city residents who constructed the previous skate park in Hedges-Boyer Park. With the continued success of multi-purpose parks with skate parks as a staple in the city's recreation system the goal would be to develop a multi-purpose park, including skate park, for each of the city's areas.
The interest exists in Tiffin as there is one skate park that is being constructed in Cleveland, Ohio called the Crooked River Skate Park in an effort to provide the city youth with another alternative. The THF awarded Public Square Group (PSG) $25,000 which is the maximum level of funding through their skate park grant program. The skate park in Cleveland Skateboard Park (which is two hours east of Tiffin) will open this fall of 2012 and it will greatly affected the urban youth by providing recreational opportunities in the city of Cleveland.
