I had a wonderful experience of officiating the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championship in Pueblo, Colorado. It was hosted at the beautiful campus of University of Colorado in Pueblo. That was my first time in Colorado and I had a wonderful time. I will admit that it was extremely stressful working this meet because of my summer class schedule. During the day I was officiating and at night I was up till the wee hours of the morning doing grad work for 3 online classes. Let's just say that I barely slept during those four day so that I was able to get everything done and completed on time.
I was selected to work as part of the horizontal jump crew, however I was asked on the last day of the meet to work women's shot put because that event was short handed on officials. Just in case you are not aware, the horizontal events are the long jump and triple jump.
I had several duties and responsibilities at this meet.
Please enjoy some of the photo's I have posted below.

I had several duties and responsibilities at this meet.
- First Recorder. The first recorder is the primary record keeper for the event and provides the official record of the event to the crew chief and field referee.
- Second Recorder and Tape reader. The second recorder keeps back up record for the event and reads the tape measurements on a fair jump.
- Flight Coordinator/Timer. The flight coordinator informs the competitors of the jumping order for each attempt (Up, On Deck, and On Hold). The flight coordinator is also responsible for rearranging the posted order of competition if an athlete must leave for another event. The flight coordinator informs the recorders and board officials of any change in the jumping order via the P and Check # cards. The flight coordinator informs the athletes of the procedure for starting the event timer, and manages the visible clock/flags for timing each attempt.
- Pit Judge, and Pit Boss. The pit judge watches the jumper from the time he/she leaves the board until the jumper exits the pit. The pit judge checks for correct phases in the triple jump as well a legal exit from the pit. The pit judge signals the board jump as to a fair jump (palm up) or foul jump (palm down). The pit judge marks the jumpers nearest point in the sand with the measuring stick, and holds the marker for the measuring official. The pit judge is also the “pit boss” and ensures the surface is prepared for the next competitor by the pit rakers.
- Pit Raker. The raker cleans up and smooths out the surface for the next competitors jump.
